Elizabeth, NJ (April 16, 2007) – Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman may get to save the day, but ShopRite Partners In Caring and General Mills are looking for kids that want to help save people from going hungry – one meal at a time! Real-life superheroes don’t wear capes or leap tall buildings in a single bound; they use their strengths and skills to help better the lives of those around them. A real-life superhero might be right under your nose – a neighbor, a student in your classroom or even your own child.
ShopRite Partners In Caring and General Mills are conducting a regional contest for “Hunger-Fighting SuperKids.” The contest recognizes the challenges children face with balancing homework, extracurricular activities and community involvement and will reward those who go above and beyond. Four “Hunger-Fighting SuperKids” will be chosen to make an appearance where only athletes and celebrities normally tread – on the Cheerios box!
Beginning, April 1st, parents, teachers and community members can submit letters of 300 words or less describing how a “super kid” they know has taken part in a hunger-fighting effort. The letter should explain how the child expresses determination to end hunger in his or her community and what he or she does to take part in hunger-fighting activities.
“We think this is a great way to reward children who use their free time to help make life a little easier for those in need,” said Karen Meleta, ShopRite Partners In Caring spokeswoman. “We hope that other children see these SuperKids on the Cheerios Box and are inspired to join in the fight against hunger. This problem continues to grow and we hope to help with motivating the next generation to make a difference.”
The essays will be judged by a panel from Wakefern Food Corporation and General Mills, Inc., based on specific activities conducted in the fight against hunger, results achieved and the spirit in which the activities were conducted. Winners will receive 2,500 bonus Box Tops for their school, a $500 donation to the hunger-fighting organization of their choice and be pictured on a limited-edition Cheerios package to be sold exclusively at ShopRite stores in Fall 2007.
The SuperKids contest is in conjunction with a National Hunger Awareness Day contest taking place in ShopRite stores. Stores across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware and Pennsylvania are competing to win a spot on the Cheerios Box. Stores that work the hardest to raise money and hunger awareness in their community between now and June 15th, will win a spot on the back of the limited-edition Cheerios box. National Hunger Awareness Day, June 5th, is a day where food banks and hunger-relief charities rally together to bring the issue to the forefront of America’s attention. While ShopRite Partners In Caring rewards ShopRite stores each year for their efforts in combating the hunger problem, this is the first time that the charity has recognized children in the community who are helping in the fight.
To submit a letter, you must be at least 18 years old and the nominated child must be an enrolled student in grades K-8, as of the 2006-2007 academic year, within Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania.
